Pernell Elven Roberts Jr. (May 18, 1928 – January 24, 2010) was an American stage, film, and television actor. He was best known for his roles as Adam Cartwright on the long-running NBC Western Bonanza (1959–1965), and as the title character of Trapper John, M.D. (1979–1986).
Roberts was born in Waycross, Georgia. He began his acting career on the stage, appearing in regional and off-Broadway productions. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War.
His breakthrough role came with Bonanza, where he played the eldest Cartwright son. Roberts left the show after six seasons, citing his dissatisfaction with the program's formulaic scripts and his desire to pursue other acting opportunities. He felt the show was limiting his growth as an actor. His departure was controversial at the time and created a rift between him and the show's producers.
After leaving Bonanza, Roberts worked steadily in television, film, and theater. He appeared in guest roles on numerous television series, including Mission: Impossible, The Big Valley, and Marcus Welby, M.D.. He also starred in several made-for-television movies.
In 1979, Roberts landed the role of Trapper John, M.D., a spin-off of the popular television series MASH*. The show was a success, and Roberts remained in the role for seven seasons. His performance earned him an Emmy nomination.
Roberts was a strong advocate for Civil Rights and often spoke out against racial discrimination. He was married four times. He died of pancreatic cancer in 2010 at the age of 81.
